On the 9th of May 1909 the first patients, 78 men, were formally admitted to Morisset Hospital, making Saturday the 9th May 2009 a most significant date in the history of Morisset Hospital – 100 years of caring for the mentally ill in our community.

The purpose of this notice is to advise of this upcoming date and to encourage interested  people to join us in working towards recognising this date in some way.

Morisset Hospital Historical Society meets in the old staff dining room at the Recreation Hall of Morisset Hospital.  Our next meeting is scheduled for 4 pm on Wednesday the 1st October 2008.   New members and visitors are welcomed.

Since Morisset Hospital Historical Society was formed in 1997 we have -

  • Published a history of Morisset Hospital – 2000  'A Private World on a Nameless Bay' - a history of Morisset Hospital, is still available for purchase from Morisset Newsagency, Dora St, Morisset or directly from us.  Price is $25.

  • Restored the historic hospital lantern – 2002  Money raised from book sales enabled us to have the historic hospital lantern professionally restored at a cost of  $5,115. Manufactured in 1878, this lantern had apparently been at the hospital since 1909.

  • Installed Morisset Multipurpose Centre display –2005  $3,000 raised by way of several grantsenabled us to have customized display cases made.  The restored hospital lantern is on permanent display in a tower showcase.  A separate display case of hospital memorabilia is changed each October.   We are in need of more small items for display in this case.

  • Established the Morisset Hospital Historical Society Website – 2005
Our website is interesting, informative and frequently updated.

  • Participated in community events.  Whenever possible, we respond to requests from community organisations to assist or participate in organised events such as community days, history talks and Mental Health awareness activities.

  • Continually worked towards preserving the heritage of Morisset Hospital.  Our current project involves expanding on and cataloguing our photograph collection.
